What Can't Go in a Dumpster in Riverside County?

Before you start tossing, know what's prohibited — it'll save you fees and hassle.

Renting a dumpster for your project? There are some items that can't go in, no matter how convenient it would be. These restrictions come from California state law, Riverside County regulations, and landfill policies.

Important

Prohibited items found in your dumpster can result in additional fees, dumpster rejection at the landfill, or legal penalties. When in doubt, ask before you toss.

Absolutely Prohibited Items

Paints, stains, and solvents
Motor oil and automotive fluids
Pesticides and herbicides
Propane tanks and gas cylinders
Batteries (all types)
Fluorescent tubes and bulbs
Asbestos-containing materials
Medical waste and sharps
Radioactive materials

Electronics (E-Waste)

California has strict e-waste laws. These items require special recycling:

  • Televisions (all types)
  • Computer monitors
  • Laptops and desktop computers
  • Printers and copiers
  • Cell phones and tablets

Riverside County offers free e-waste drop-off at household hazardous waste facilities.

Appliances with Refrigerants

These items contain refrigerants that must be properly recovered:

  • Refrigerators and freezers
  • Air conditioners (window and portable units)
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Water coolers

We can handle these items separately with proper refrigerant recovery — just let us know.

Tires

Tires cannot go in dumpsters due to their tendency to rise to the surface of landfills and trap gases. Options include:

  • Tire retailers (often accept old tires with purchase)
  • Tire recycling facilities
  • Riverside County collection events

Mattresses

California's mattress recycling program means mattresses should be recycled, not landfilled. Some dumpster companies accept them with an additional fee for proper handling. We separate mattresses for recycling.

What You CAN Put in a Dumpster

The good news — most common items are fine:

  • General household junk
  • Furniture (non-hazardous)
  • Construction debris (wood, drywall, concrete)
  • Yard waste
  • Carpeting and flooring
  • Appliances (without refrigerants)
  • Metal items

What to Do with Prohibited Items

Riverside County offers free household hazardous waste disposal:

  • Permanent facility: Riverside County Household Hazardous Waste
  • Mobile collections: Scheduled throughout the county
  • E-waste events: Free electronics recycling days

Check the county website for current schedules and locations.
