How to Prepare for Hot Tub Removal (Checklist)
A few simple steps before we arrive make hot tub removal faster and smoother.
That old hot tub has seen better days. Maybe it stopped working, maybe you're tired of maintenance, or maybe you just want the deck space back. Whatever the reason, removing a hot tub takes some preparation. Here's your complete checklist.
Before Removal Day: The Prep Checklist
Disconnect electrical
Have an electrician disconnect and cap the electrical supply. This is required for safety.
Drain the water
Empty the tub completely. Most have a drain valve; some need a submersible pump.
Remove the cover
Take off the hot tub cover and set it aside — we'll take that too.
Clear the path
Make sure we can access the tub. Move patio furniture, plants, and obstacles.
Unlock gates
If the hot tub is in a backyard, ensure gate access. Wide gates are helpful.
Note any obstacles
Stairs, narrow passages, or low overhangs? Let us know when booking.
Protect landscaping
If there's delicate landscaping nearby, point it out so we can be careful.
Do I Need an Electrician?
Yes, for safety reasons. Hot tubs run on 220V circuits — the same power as your dryer or stove. An electrician should:
- Turn off and lock out the breaker
- Disconnect wiring at the spa panel
- Cap or remove the electrical connection
- Provide documentation if needed
This typically costs $75-150 and takes about 30 minutes. Schedule it before your removal appointment.
How Do I Drain the Hot Tub?
Most hot tubs have a drain valve near the bottom:
- Locate the drain valve (check your manual or look near the base)
- Attach a garden hose to direct water away from the house
- Open the valve and let gravity do the work
- For faster draining, use a submersible pump
Draining can take 30 minutes to a few hours depending on size. Plan accordingly.
What Happens During Removal
On removal day, our crew will:
- Confirm electrical is disconnected
- Assess the removal path
- Cut the hot tub into sections (most can't be moved whole)
- Carefully remove sections through your property
- Load everything into our truck
- Clean up the area
Most residential hot tub removals take 1-2 hours.
After Removal: What's Left?
Once the hot tub is gone, you'll have:
- A concrete pad or deck space (we don't remove concrete pads)
- Electrical conduit that can be removed or repurposed
- Space for whatever comes next — garden, furniture, nothing at all
If you want the concrete pad removed too, ask about our light demolition services.
